In 1998, I accidentally backed into a woman and her child while leaving the grocery store. I bumped that kid pretty hard and saw her go airborne and just fucking splat on the asphalt like an old watermelon. Before the mom can get up and figure out what a mess her daughter had become, I peeled out of that parking lot.
A few hours later, I was feeling pretty guilty, so, driving a different car, I drove back to the grocery store to see how things turned out. Well, that little girl was still a mess. I thought just her head splattered, but it was the whole body. She was just a pile of pink, gooey chunks sizzling in the August sun. Her mom, who seemed to not take too much damage, was waiting for the splat team to come clean her up. They say that you're not supposed to scoop up the splats of a person yourself because you're likely to cause more damage, but man that would be hard to resist if that was my daughter.
I couldn't work up the courage to actually tell the mom that I was was the guy who splatted her daughter. I think about it every day. I wonder if the doctors were even able to recoagulate in time to save her motor functions. Shit, I don't know and maybe it's better that I don't.
