i can't post images, but if I could, I'd show you a screenshot of my task manager right now where Discord is using literally 1.3 GB of RAM

2018-08-21 13:01:17 UTC

1.3 GB

2018-08-21 13:01:19 UTC

for a chat client

2018-08-21 13:01:22 UTC

like i said ... most people building these apps, have no idea about performance

2018-08-21 13:01:59 UTC

calling it lightweight was an absolute joke and Discord are a bunch of pseudo-intellectual crooks, this is so sad, alexa can we all use qTox

2018-08-21 13:02:00 UTC

around 500MB for me

2018-08-21 13:02:28 UTC

which yeah, is insane

2018-08-21 13:02:33 UTC

Even 500MB is a lot, considering how old some peoples' machines are.

2018-08-21 13:02:38 UTC

its a trade off

2018-08-21 13:02:53 UTC

209.2MB for me

2018-08-21 13:03:05 UTC

for reference, Teamspeak only uses around 25 MB for me

2018-08-21 13:03:07 UTC

my machine has 16GB i dont care about RAM, but if it starts hogging CPU

2018-08-21 13:03:35 UTC

OH YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BAD DISCORD'S SCREENSHARE IS FOR YOUR CPU

2018-08-21 13:03:42 UTC

they're doing VIDEO ENCODING and DECODING on the CPU

2018-08-21 13:03:49 UTC

what the ACTUAL FUCK

2018-08-21 13:03:58 UTC

like the Slack client used to open a window/thread (cant remember the details) for EVERY org you were in

2018-08-21 13:03:59 UTC

HAHA 100% CPU USAGE HERE WE COME

2018-08-21 13:04:02 UTC

Incredible.

2018-08-21 13:04:24 UTC

i have six cores and I still want to actually kill myself whenever I use screenshare on Discord

2018-08-21 13:04:38 UTC

yeah my machine is a bit of a potato otherwise, and when i play games and use discord chat, my FPS is shit. if i turn off discord, its all fine

2018-08-21 13:05:07 UTC

According to my partner who is a games animator Unity up until very recently used the CPU for everything pretty much

2018-08-21 13:05:39 UTC

Pissed him right the hell off

2018-08-21 13:05:46 UTC

and as for idle CPU usage by discord, it's using 15% for me and literally nothing else is using that much CPU right now

2018-08-21 13:05:56 UTC

not even doing anything and it spikes up to 25%

2018-08-21 13:06:09 UTC

isn't discord cloud based?

2018-08-21 13:06:14 UTC

about 1% for me

2018-08-21 13:06:17 UTC

obv

2018-08-21 13:06:35 UTC

as we've been talking out before, Discord's based on Electron

2018-08-21 13:06:42 UTC

aka aids.js

2018-08-21 13:06:59 UTC

whether it's cloud based or not doesn't matter

2018-08-21 13:07:05 UTC

it's still electron based

2018-08-21 13:07:09 UTC

yes the data and everything would be stored in the cloud, and there is a backend to transfer messages, voice streams etc. but you still have a client running on your machine

2018-08-21 13:07:31 UTC

and that client is poorly optimized

2018-08-21 13:07:55 UTC

oh god what is this electron this looks horrific

2018-08-21 13:08:05 UTC

javascript html and css

2018-08-21 13:08:10 UTC

yes

2018-08-21 13:08:17 UTC

welcome to the "modern" desktop app

2018-08-21 13:08:23 UTC

not only that, but the discord client itself is 32-bit yet the installer forces you to use a 64-bit system even if the software doesn't 👏 👏 👏 👏

2018-08-21 13:08:42 UTC

who made discord anyway

2018-08-21 13:08:52 UTC

What effect can that have on performance?

2018-08-21 13:08:55 UTC

a bunch of code bros who didn't like slack or skype?
