As is, most people can't configure their routers to host a Minecraft server, so idk about 10ish people getting a server and internet connection good enough to serve potentially hundreds of people, for every different group
Might work for small groups
the "problem" is message history
gotta store all the messages for every channel in every server on multiple seeds
unless you want to do it like IRC and only have new messages while you are connected
but then you might as well use IRC
<:GWmythsBlobGlare:391322010980057120>
But I want to ~~blackmail~~ store memes from you guys
so run an always-on client on a server
I have hundreds of gigabytes of IRC logs from the last 20 years lol
@turtwig woah, that's really cool
what?
the IRC logs
lol not really
It is
Do you ever go through them
nah
Yes, essentially IRC, but with a decentralized server.
The master seed file (the deep lore, if you will) only gets updated when a seeder is online.
But of course, you could write a bot that acts as a user and seeds for you at intervals to a cloud service.
If no seeders are online, the message history is just being shared among active users until one is online, at which point the seed is updated. But there would be multiple people doing that so it's not much of a big deal.
One major issue is anonymity, especially for voice channels.
if anything that isn't shit will displace discord, it's gonna be "discord but FOSS" anyway. So basically irc with fancy interface
whether you like it or not, it is necessary, and it's much easier to do on a centralized server
(as in freenode/rizon/etc., not as in discord-centralized)
@Kodama Thank you, but we've already been testing this. It's kind of shit
@leavethisbotnet I feel like my decentralized solution takes anonymity into account better than a centralized server
@M4Gunner Really? Cause google uses the Webtorrent protocol for live video chat
Riot is shit because the interface is crap imo
i cant speak to its performance
The underlying matrix protocol Riot is built on seems to be overly centralized for what I'd like
why would you want your DMs stored on 50 million strangers' computers tho
It's only that each *room* in a community can be on a different physical server
@M4Gunner They'd be encrypted by rank, and membership, on a revolving key
If you're kicked, you can't attempt to break it
If you did, you'd only be at the guest level
yeah but i wouldnt send my credit card number into the wild just because i can obfuscate it
Aren't you sending your DMs into the wild right now?
no im sending them to discord, so if russia has them its discords fault
if i dont know you, you dont need my encrypted DMs on your computer to seed
