yes they're torquey as fuck but that doesn't translate to an enjoyable driving experience
they're noticably rougher, even the new ones, if you pair them with manuals you often find yourself needing to shift at the kind of points petrol becomes fun
all the power is low down, they don't rev high
and also, almost every diesel ends up with at best iffy handling characteristics
because diesel lumps are fucking heavy as shit
so you end up with poor weight distribution and suspension setups that aren't conducive to exciting driving to deal with the weight
the only "sporty" diesel that would have been interesting was the v12 diesel they investigated dumping into the r8
but again, the engine itself and the behaviour of diesels isn't what you really want in performance cars
Yeah, I haven't driven any small displacement diesel cars. Only trucks with huge torque numbers
wait, I take that back
VW jetta TDI
puking emoji required
don't get me wrong, diesel engines are fantastic for shitbox econocars and obviously the only real option for serious haulage
but they are not the kind of thing you want from anything sporty/performance
Eh, to each their own
I can't think of a car that isn't for heavy duty stuff that is better in diesel form
at least from a driver perspective
Mercedes 300d
Oh, driver perspective
the best comparison I can think of is the golf gti vs gtd, it's generally fairly difficult to compare even diesel options against petrol counterparts though because they aren't quite for the same kind of buyers
remove the fact it's faster in petrol form, it still sounds and drives better
I'd take the diesel. VW diesels have a good track record, and the mileage is better
Sound is relative
I actually like the gti better for everything except sound
And you're not buying a VW for speed lol
I enjouly diesel noise
Enjoy
But no, they are not for the same buyers
if you don't buy it for speed you don't buy the gti/gtd
both are basically performance versions
But some people like their speed down low
Like me.
if you want economy, you get one of the economy models
I almost never go past 4k rom on my cruze.
GTI guys buy it to be 'Euro-ricey'
I love low end torque and surging midrange haul
From what i understand, the gtd is damn good at that
And 180hp is more than enough with dynamics like that
but still slower than the gti
So?
