australia absolutely did not dodge the oil crisis @Fitzydog, their pump prices jumped by about 2x as a result of the opec embargo

2019-02-28 17:18:27 UTC

except the new wagon

2019-02-28 18:39:02 UTC

I'm not really sure what the negativity over jags is about, I and my family have had loads of them over the years and none have been any more or less problematic than anything else

2019-02-28 18:39:35 UTC

rust is a genuine issue up until... well I guess the very recent ones

2019-02-28 18:40:06 UTC

anything before the modern stype was a rust issue if it wasn't looked after

2019-02-28 19:13:31 UTC

@LOGiK Here in the states, they're infamous for electrical problems that cause them to be written off as 'salvage' by the insurance company and sold for pennies on the dollar.

You can't even give them away.

2019-02-28 19:15:47 UTC

I wonder if that's due to a vicious circle; people assume they suck because of historical issues, the value is degraded, the people who buy them are then the kind of people less likely to look after them which results in more issues with them

2019-02-28 19:16:40 UTC

I don't think insurance has much to do with writing cars off for faults though, insurance only applies in the event of an accident, a car failing because of a fault wouldn't end up going through insurance

2019-02-28 19:19:04 UTC

they are known for v12s and those will have higher maintenance costs just because there are more parts to go bad

2019-02-28 19:20:24 UTC

if you want an old xj, why would you be interested in the i6 when you coupd get a v12

2019-02-28 19:20:46 UTC

so all the enthusiasts end up with v12s and end up dealing with them haha

2019-02-28 19:24:38 UTC

jaguar haven't made a v12 in like 20 years

2019-02-28 19:26:30 UTC

and if you do go 20 years back, all English cars was 100% shite from all the infighting between the workers and owners of the car companies

2019-02-28 19:27:16 UTC

the xj40 and x300 were fine imo

2019-02-28 19:27:51 UTC

rust was the issue really, I had an xj40 with 300k on it though

2019-02-28 19:28:11 UTC

it got killed by someone driving into it while it was parked, sad really

2019-02-28 19:29:29 UTC

the early transition to the v8 in like 97 was iffy because of the dumb nikasil liners and awful chain tensioners

2019-02-28 19:30:39 UTC

but ultimately all the jags except two that I've dealt with were fine, just regular oil changes and a few bits and pieces they seem to go forever

2019-02-28 19:31:18 UTC

idk, maybe it's just the exported ones. You can find them all over Craigslist for super cheap, and a laundry list of issues mostly related to wiring

2019-02-28 19:31:31 UTC

the v12 was horribly cramped in most applications though and certainly overheated in the xjs

2019-02-28 19:31:50 UTC

plus the v12 was a suffocated engine in design

2019-02-28 19:32:39 UTC

@Fitzydog the problem is that if they're on craigslist they've probably already been owned by 2-4 people who did 0 maintenance

2019-02-28 19:33:02 UTC

You don't maintain wiring though.
