I don't think that's the case but America has held this position as the world's most physically libertarian place pretty much since it gained independence

All I said was that gun control is needed until you can "re-educate" the populace for lack of a more flattering term to regain their thirst for their own personal liberty

The flip-side of gun control, is state protection. They're two terms for the same thing.
As long as the people are not entrusted with the responsibility of their own protection, they will never ask for it.

Why should the state 're-educate' anyone? It's against their own interests to have the population armed.

They just realized they could not constitutionally ban it

It was always protected under free speech

Well 3d printing is going to put a massive strike through the concept of gun control
