Humans are naturally tribalistic and for most people simply picking a side is easier than educating themself

It's a balancing act though. It's easy to become tribal, yet at the same time people will try to 'stay vigilant' - which often results in what we see in many tribes of all political persuasions; various forms of 'purity testing'
