They marketed that movie to all the old pokefags. The firs 30 minutes were like a recap of Season 1 of the anime, and they retconned Misty, Brock, and Gary.

It had some interesting ideas. But much was lost with the cut episodes.
You have to remember the original season had the 4kids acid wash. Like the first onepiece episodes and all
that acid wash was actual acid not the ph type
For all that 4kids does, they didn’t really do much to the plot as far as Pokémon goes.
