Syrian Army T72s roll through the ruins of Aleppo and fight rebels in urban engagements. Usually any tank commander would want to avoid combat operations in urban environments such likes this. Entrenched and concealed RPGs or wire guided missile systems will be able to easily strike their vehicle, delivering a fatal hit for crew and systems from positions which enable easy targeting of the armours weak spots.

For this reason a lot of the tanks that we see in Syria are upgraded T72s (either model A or B) which are outfitted with the Kontakt 1 explosive reactive armour blocks from the late 90s. This layer of protection is effective against the smaller sized RPG-7 munitions and essential to the survival of crew and vehicle. But nevertheless this system does not alleviate the threat of US supplied TOWs and the Iranian copies that saw such extensive use all over the battlefield in Syria.

Sometimes you have to risk movement through such dangerous urban areas to support a friendly advance or to attack fortified enemy positions. A skilled crew and capable supporting infantry elements are key to survival. This tank commander is on point though and spots an enemy infantry element crossing a danger area who try to outmaneuver the T72. The main gun is quickly directed onto their position and the threat is eliminated with an accurate shot.
