it;s for the same reason that kitchens in high clas restaurants are all white

2019-12-16 00:49:17 UTC

That's what I thought tbh. I'm not really sure what Kantbot is on about with this "taste is objective" nonsense but I do agree with his opinions on the current state of fantasy fiction.

and operating rooms

2019-12-16 00:49:23 UTC

its a bit like the claim "words have no meaning because somebody somewhere *could* use a word to mean something totally different than what is understood by its use generally"

2019-12-16 00:49:44 UTC

you should understand what people mean when they say taste is objective

2019-12-16 00:49:48 UTC

they aren't strictly wrong

2019-12-16 00:49:53 UTC

I think someone's taste can be indicative of certain desirable personality traits but this isn't the same as taste being objective.

2019-12-16 00:50:32 UTC

its objective in the sense that humans consistently recognize that taste, and that taste is based in some evopsych reason

2019-12-16 00:50:48 UTC

I mean, to me the word objective means its universally true, as in its even true to non humans or robots or aliens.

2019-12-16 00:51:00 UTC

nothing fulfils that definition of objective

2019-12-16 00:51:29 UTC

Yeah, I think most things are subjective

2019-12-16 00:51:40 UTC

no, literally nothing

2019-12-16 00:51:41 UTC

at least

2019-12-16 00:51:43 UTC

I can't think of anything

2019-12-16 00:51:52 UTC

that would fulfil the definition of objective as you put it here

2019-12-16 00:52:06 UTC

so my standard for 'objectivity' is quite a bit lower

2019-12-16 00:52:06 UTC

it's worthless

2019-12-16 00:52:19 UTC

I think thats only a problem if you try to over rationalise everything

2019-12-16 00:52:49 UTC

Human beings have limits we all live fine with these limits its not a problem

2019-12-16 00:52:57 UTC

So, liking big titty elf mages as opposed to the original origin of wizards as philosophers and alchemists is indicative of personality traits that our evolution drives us to dislike?

2019-12-16 00:53:54 UTC

I would seriously doubt that hentai doujins are capable of inspiring the depth of emotion that like, a great work of classic literature is capable of inspiring

2019-12-16 00:53:59 UTC

and that goes for all humans

2019-12-16 00:54:19 UTC

"well there ***coooooould*** be someone where it was true"

2019-12-16 00:54:20 UTC

the point is

2019-12-16 00:54:25 UTC

the thing itself is consistent

2019-12-16 00:54:43 UTC

and it is what produces the reaction - at least insofar as human brains are somewhat similar

2019-12-16 00:55:10 UTC

I think the issue is that people mistake consistency for objectivity. These are still ultimately concepts that don't exist outside of our minds. There's nothing objective about them. I don't even fully beleive reality exists as we see it, but I don't think we can ever know.

2019-12-16 00:55:30 UTC

google defines objective as "not dependent on the mind for existence"

2019-12-16 00:55:44 UTC

Weaboo that's why my standard for objectivity is quite a bit lower

2019-12-16 00:55:46 UTC

or I mean

2019-12-16 00:55:54 UTC

I get that

2019-12-16 00:56:00 UTC

But it's still a dumb word to use.

2019-12-16 00:56:04 UTC

my standard for objectivity is quite a bit lower, so the aesthetic objectivists have a good argument

2019-12-16 00:56:06 UTC

so saying like "9/10 people agree" that doesn't fit google's definition.

2019-12-16 00:56:14 UTC

its not a dumb word to use, people understand what you're talking about

2019-12-16 00:56:24 UTC

if you want to be super strict about the definition of objective

2019-12-16 00:56:28 UTC

then nothing meets it

2019-12-16 00:56:43 UTC

because nothing is both mind-independent and comprehensible

2019-12-16 00:56:45 UTC

Yeah, okay, I get that.

2019-12-16 00:56:59 UTC

Okay so there is objective taste but not in a literal sense.

2019-12-16 00:57:06 UTC

merriam webster "of, relating to, or being an object, phenomenon, or condition in the realm of sensible experience independent of individual thought and perceptible by all observers : having reality independent of the mind"
