The Jedi kidnap kids with force sensitivity, emotionally torture and brainwash them, and leave them with literally nothing if they wash out of training. They're often too young to ever know their parents when the Jedi take them, so they're left with no family, no friends, other than those within the Jedi Order.
All of this was aided and abetted by the Galactic Republic, who fund the Jedi's activities in exchange for their service as military tacticians and assassins.
