i think the mandarin i studied pretty much made my trip in taiwan a much different experience that it would have been

most ppl there are pretty terrible at english except like 25% of younger people

and even then, theyre often too shy to speak it

really fucking hard

so i just spoke mandarin

i could at least read half the signs since i studied it

so it was okay

even in zhuhai

most people in zhuhai should speak cantonese

but since I'm a young person, most people just assume I speak mandarin

i can read basic stuff and generally recognise enough characters on signs to get the general meaning
