I helped raise my dad's dog 1 week after he got her, had to take the grandparents out of state for like 2 weeks and she imprinted on me in that time. She was high strung all the time after that when I had to leave but we found leaving a wifebeater I wore when mowing the lawn, on top of her crate helped keep her calm

Dad got a puppy, barely spent time with her before having to leave for 2 weeks in crucial development period
I took care of her for that period, when it was over she got separation anxiety when I had to go
And we discovered my stench on dirty laundry helped her relax
TL;DR dirty laundry helps dogs cope
smells are how dogs identify each other (cats too)
