I don't get it, if companies can afford to sell your dividend paying stocks where they will eventually have lost money why wouldn't they just... take out loans that can eventually be paid off for good instead

And high performing stock means you attract more investors at the top
The small payout the company pays in dividends is worth it in the grand scheme of things
There's also probably regulations which dictate there have to be dividends

So its a fixed percentage
They're variable and yield based from my understanding. When a company performs well the dividend % is reduced, if the company performs poorly the dividend is raised a % to keep investors satisfied and incentivized, also attracting new investment
They're not get rich quick schemes for the investor, it's long term growth
So regardless of whether the company meets projections or falls short, so long as it remains solvent your money is earning money and in theory outpacing inflation. You can also reinvest the cash in more shares to increase your yield
It's not for day traders
There are other factors involved like how much cash and debt a company has on hand
