They were legal to own.
Tanks are not the top weapon of the day, but are not legal to own in fully operation form.
Our rights have regressed.
That's the problem with a society built on rights first and obligations last.
Only the rights with no obligations survive.
Freedom of speech comes with obligations to tell the truth, so that's gone.
Freedom of self defense comes with obligations to be law abiding, so that's gone.
Freedom to have unlimited welfare comes with no obligations, so that's all the rage.
Go back and read the Illiad. You'll find scant mention of rights (benefits) granted at birth to everyone. What you will find is a society that believes people have immense obligations.
Rights came about in societies that already had firmly held beliefs regarding their own obligations. Those rights were stated in union with their already established norms of obligations.
