partly facilitated by sociologists working for US govt under auspices of census data collection and army cohesion

maybe not cohesive in that they fought each other, but enough to separate from non whites

I think there's good reason to consider that whites were not cohesive til then either

fought each other to no end

Whiteness may not have existed then, but it exists now and the whole world knows it whether whites want to admit it or not. (And in any case the founding fathers even used the term.)

but still saw others as non greeks

people were pretty cohesive with their native ethnic units

a lot of my family spoke German up until WWI

Bit further back I think it was 1880s or so based around when internationalism kick started. You can look at the literature of "the whites versus the yellows" by the British.

Before that point though you still had the European continental wars where everyone thought everyone else was subhuman

its all murky. when germany allied with japan they called them the yellow aryans

So I guess you could say nationalism brought about white identity 🤔

A more and more integrated world means new designations and ethnic amalgamations will be recognized
