I haven't kept up with that sort of thing

2019-10-08 10:50:05 UTC

when a weapon works well, im not sure i see the need it altering too much

2019-10-08 11:08:32 UTC

We've been arguing whether the M16 actually works well since we introduced it

2019-10-08 11:11:32 UTC

hmmm

2019-10-08 11:11:36 UTC

no comment

2019-10-08 11:11:47 UTC

It didn’t originally when we used to Nam

2019-10-08 11:11:52 UTC

As with anything

2019-10-08 11:11:59 UTC

It works well with maintenance

2019-10-08 11:12:07 UTC

The soldiers thought it was self cleaning

2019-10-08 11:12:09 UTC

I still much prefer the M4 though

2019-10-08 11:12:21 UTC

Yeah, Mattel

2019-10-08 11:12:23 UTC

Lol

2019-10-08 11:12:33 UTC

I think changing to the M4 and not changing the ammo for such a long time created its own set of problems

2019-10-08 11:12:37 UTC

was it really suitable for the evironments of vietnam?

2019-10-08 11:13:16 UTC

Probably not they were fighting people with aks

2019-10-08 11:13:23 UTC

It's still suitable in Philippine environments, so... I'll have to go with yes

2019-10-08 11:13:38 UTC

Let me rephrase

2019-10-08 11:13:49 UTC

We didn’t give our soldiers a good hand going into that conflict

2019-10-08 11:14:00 UTC

Bad tactics and policy fucked Vietnam

2019-10-08 11:14:03 UTC

Not the tooks

2019-10-08 11:14:08 UTC

Tools*

2019-10-08 11:14:22 UTC

True but having good tools does help

2019-10-08 11:14:24 UTC

fair enough

2019-10-08 11:14:30 UTC

The Jews beat AK's with fucken submachine guns ffs

2019-10-08 11:14:34 UTC

I suppose the more relevant argument today isn't the M16/M4 itself, but rather the choice of ammo

2019-10-08 11:14:35 UTC

No, for sure

2019-10-08 11:15:12 UTC

Is there a current list of contenders for the replacement cartridge?

2019-10-08 11:15:19 UTC

But I don't think the idea of "the M16 is a shit gun" explains away the fact that they weren't cared for properly

2019-10-08 11:15:38 UTC

It's like comparing a MiG-21 to an F-15

2019-10-08 11:15:57 UTC

The MiG was always low maintenance with decent enough performance

2019-10-08 11:16:01 UTC

Same as the AK

2019-10-08 11:16:07 UTC

I don't think those trials on a replacement cartridge ever get anywhere, so I don't think there's an official shortlist

2019-10-08 11:16:39 UTC

But they "consider" almost everything that pops up that gets popular in the civilian market

2019-10-08 11:17:23 UTC

I think the discussion hinges on "replacement for which context?"

2019-10-08 11:17:43 UTC

And whether it’s worth replacing in the first place

2019-10-08 11:18:10 UTC

Yeah P much

2019-10-08 11:18:18 UTC

If it ain't broke don't fix it

2019-10-08 11:18:34 UTC

There’s been some cool stuff brought to trial’s but the military always bawks at the price

2019-10-08 11:21:30 UTC

So much of our logistics is built around 5.56 that deciding to replace it is going to be a huge overhaul. And they're never impressed enough by the difference to make that investment

2019-10-08 11:23:26 UTC

Yeah exactly
