Here are some videos which might shine a light on why you may want to use different platforms instead of Windows or Mac. The people on the open source side are not particularly opposed to the idea of free speech or busting Monopolies.

Jack Spirko and friends founded a disaster response group called CACTeam, Citizens Assisting Citizens. It seems to be the best charity I've found, dollar for dollar, though it is small and might not be able to utilize say a quarter million dollars or something like that.
