Even wind has suffered with nimby bs.
A few wind turbines were almost built in Alabama and some group opposed it on faulty logic. They literally complained about the environmental impact of stirring up the dirt - as if it was a majorly serious issue. Hundred bucks says they wouldn’t care if it was a Walmart.
That's what I mean by principle. The problem is that use of power not the target. Sort of the same thing we have with speech. Just because we don't like the target doesn't mean the government should have that power to block or restrict.
Yeah. I agree. This is why I’m so concerned about the environmental movement. It’s always been ideological bullcrap, but I’m worried that they’ll get even worse with tactics. These people will literally sob over climate change. You have to agree with their narrow view on climate change. It may get more extreme. The antinuclear ideology is already very strong.
The antinuclear thing pisses me off.
@Salacious Swanky Cat Yeah, I dislike that many issues are presented as binaries. I suspect that many of the people claiming global warming is a hoax don't really believe that, but say so because the media and public perceive the issue as binary. I've met many outdoorsman who care very much about the environment and wildlife but vote republican. They also usually have a better grasp of the local ecosystems than the "experts" in the government who are often far away.
It was one of the best power related technologies we had, but because of, what, three incidents of incompetence or accidents in the entire history of nuclear power, it's not allowed to be used because the public thinks its dangerous.
I'm sure there are more than three, but the only ones I can think of are Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima.
I actually think it is more the media itself portraying people that have questions about global warming as outright deniers.
@grant well, the biggest issue is that the republicans don’t address climate change. In my state election, I voted for democrats for the public service commission positions.
@wolfman1911 those are the big ones. The problem now is that environmentalists seriously believe that radiation is a bigger threat than it really is.
To be honest, the left makes it real easy to be a climate change denier.
Nuclear power was one of the only times I ever heard my engineering professor weigh in on politics (all in favor of more nuclear power). They actually called one of my professors to advise on what to do during Fukushima.
All of these predictions of doom and gloom being imminent if we don't act immediately for all my life and longer, and all of those predictions have come to nothing.
How can you blame someone for concluding it's all horseshit?
@wolfman1911 I don’t blame you. Al gore completely fear mongers in his documentary and people see though the bs. I actually didn’t think climate change really was an issue because of inconvenient truth. His argument was so bad.
Yeah if you have one single question about climate change, that means you're a denier
One professor was complaining about having to buy nuclear material from Russia for space exploration because all the restrictions and regulations on American production.
@grant that’s cool. I’m pretty sure that the Japanese can move back there now.
@grant doesn’t surprise me. We don’t recycle spent fuel rods because of ‘terrorism’ risks. No joke. New nuclear plants are illegal in 14 states because there’s supposedly no solution to nuclear waste. It’s ridiculous
My brother in law who works for a big electricity company that is contracted by the state says if people in Germany would know how much of their energy they have to buy from neighbours like France people would storm the government.
Years and years of pushing the public to accept nuclear energy is bad has made Germany very vulnerable when it comes to energy production.
So much for the story I heard about Germany being the one to sell power to other European countries.
@Euro looking for a green card I agree. The Germans shut down their nuclear plants because a tsunami hit Japan. Germany could practically be off coal today if they hadn’t done that. The Germans are idiots. I triggered some leftist by saying this isn’t the first time the Germans failed a final solution. Lol
@wolfman1911 they do. It’s a balance market. France just serves as Germany’s battery for the most part.
Nice
One of the big providers of German energy is Gazprom (a Russian company). Gerhard Schröder the ex-chancellor of Germany sits on the board of Gazprom today.
Funny how things work out...
Yeah. Super ebil Putin puppet trump criticized Angela over that. It’s hilarious that the can’t even accept it when trump says something they should agree with.
https://twitter.com/scotgov/status/1060556451683418112 looks like it really is time to emigrate
What in the shitte has happened to Scotland?
I can't wait until the pendulum swings back far enough that people don't care anymore and start being open about the fact that we all hate everyone, rather than only whites and dudes.
Or rather, 'hate'. It's not actually hate to refuse to pander.
They forgot to add " to "Experts".
@oktophonie Do what you feel is best, but these things won't change if people just keep running from these problems (not that everyone can or needs to fight these things).
for sure, but this place is a lost cause
"Today, I'll approach people insisting I am a good person, and that I like them and support everything they do.
If they don't happen to hear me or understand, I'll repeat myself because they need to."
-thoughts of a leftist
I'm not one to think that any place is a "lost cause", as these are just places/people that really do think they are doing the good/right thing. The problem is that they don't understand that doing these kinds of things can only have a negative outcome for humans.
I've recently applied for a job in Sweden. out of the frying pan...
hah
Even with negative outcomes, people in situations in which they're pandering or virtue signaling think they're covered because the outward appearance looks virtuous. They have a simple and automatic defense
"What, you're going to be MAD at me for doing the *right* thing. What are you, a Drumpf supporter?"
That's part of the understanding these people don't have, to believe yourself incapable of making poor choices "for the greater good/inclusion". Empathy and compassion without reason is just blind.
