Sam Harris recent podcast talked about this. His guess argued that the rise in online only relationship is related to the increase in anexity and depression being seen more and more in society
I think it's a degenerative spiral
Online interaction is easy but doesn't meet the same needs as meatspace interaction. However meatspace interaction is much harder to disconnect from and harder to "bubble"
As people become more used to the sort of online "light switch" conversation, where you can just turn it on and off, and to the bubble, they get less capable of interacting meaningfully outside of that context, adding negative feedback to the purest source of positive social feedback

I don't see lack of casual hookups as necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, though it may be symptomatic of other bad things
Its the source of change that's an issue not the symptom. If casual hookups were down because people were only having sex in committed relationships, than that would be good. In reality we've made a bunch of women delusional with the self esteem movement and damaged men for feminism.
A lot of the people quoted did it because they were prioritizing other shit, were paranoid about STDs or didn't want to casually fuck in general tbh
