it's just categorization
similarly, if I talked about my conservative friend, who is an anti constitutional socialist, but they're christian, you'd probably feel like I was taking you for a ride
@wolfman1911 and lol, ive had so many esoteric convos about Dark Souls to the point where people have convinced me not to like it anymore 😢
categories are important for conveying information. The more we dilute categories, the worse our ability to convey what it is we want, or dont want
I've never liked the pacing of Soulsborne
Basically the tl;dr that killed my enjoyment is being told they are crappy games with irritating combat to give the impression of difficulty. just fluff and no substance ðŸ˜
@RoadtoDawn So am i going to have to convince you to like Dark Souls again? *even tho i've never played any of those games* :)
I dont know that I would go that far
they're games with very specific and interesting design that is somewhat undermined by hitbox and netcode fuckery
They *kinda* have a point. As much as I stan Demons Souls
they're very slow and patience-driven, which isnt really my thing, but there are certainly good design elements
it's just an overhyped franchise, is the main thing
a lot of the visual design is pulled from Berserk, and for whatever reason people have now decided that attack+dodge is a Dark Souls thing
How could you be talked out of liking something
That's insane
because you examine that thing and the bits you ignored start to bother you
Its not hard....
Most people have a game they loved at first when they're young that actually really sucked lol
I've actually been pretty good on that front, for the most part
gone back and played games I remembered being good, and most of em are still good, to the point where I'm having trouble remembering the bad ones I didnt *know* were bad
I think certain elements can draw people deep into crappy games
even the games I didnt play (so confirmed no nostalgia goggles) from back in the day still hold up pretty well
it's when things got into the cinematic walking sections era that going back through older titles starts to suck
Conversely, I don't accept 'nostalgia goggles' as valid criticism against people that say they like an old game. Things can just be good in someone's view, people can just like something
I've never thought about it, i wonder if i have a classification for an RPG.
well generally people are talking about something qualitatively. Some people will absolutely forget how awful certain parts of a game were, or have an inflated view of the complexity/depth of the mechanics
but I've also had people tell me I had nostalgia goggles just for saying Older X is better than Newer X, when I played them both in the same year
Or even worse. When you play the older game last, and love the older game more than any other
Short of being afflicted with a rare sort of 6 month nostalgia, I feel comfortable telling them where they can take their adhom :^)
yup, that sort of thing happens too. I suspect it has to do with what your expectations are going in though
Yeah come on, that was half a year ago. This is today. Get with the times and stop living in the past like an old man!
it's also fun telling people about cool shit they didnt know about in games they played ages ago
like when I found out that there were people who didnt strafejump through 90% of Return to Castle Wolfenstein
lol
What blows me away is playing an amazing 20+ year old game for the first time. You 'get' the game because you've played others from the era, so age isn't a problem. It being old, yet fresh and great to play is so surreal
As an aside: I played Dead Space this year for the first time and was very pleased. It's actually a highlight of my year. And that isn't even that old
@RoadtoDawn it's hard to get into something old and the fan base has chilled out but you just want to talk about it. Ive read five out if the six original Dune series and I'm dying to talk and see art about it etc and it's as old as my mom lol
I'll get talked into getting into something, and by the time I'm caught up they've already moved onto something else to be excited about. It's a losing battle with friends lol
Exactly
I love Dead Space. I even liked the third game, even though they did everything they could to make it bad. As much as I hate what EA did to it, I have to appreciate how they ended the series.
