out of nowhere the war becomes a war over slavery
nevermind that slave states still in the union still have slavery
nevermind that the emmancipation proclamation frees exactly zero slaves in union land
Like I said, this is one subject where people who actually know history are not allowed to question the narrarive taught to people who know zero history
I dont think it was a case of domestic colonialism but two different economies in one country, that caused the rift between north and south. The north didnt want a monopoly on southern goods (like between Britain and the US earlier), but they wanted to establish a trading policy beneficial to the northern economy and harmful to the southern one. The north sold a lot domestically so the wanted tariffs and trade barriers and the south exported a lot so they didnt want the US to increase tariffs, because they feared other nation would put tariffs on the southern goods in response. Thats not inward colonialism in my opinion but two economic systems in one country trying to get the most beneficial trade policy for themselves and disregarding the other half of the country/economic system.
I think the south was right in that argument, but they were probably as much motivated by self interest as the north.
But who actually thinks the civil war was fought over slavery?
most people, sadly
occam's razor
look for the simplest answer
what guided every single threat of seccession before 1861?
northern tarrif policy at the expense of the south
every single time
what did the elected president say in his innauguration
pay these fucking tarrifs or I wil invade you
I think they secceded because Lincoln was elected without any southern support, showing that the north could now push through any trade policy without the south having a say in it.
the south already didnt have any say in it
they had been dealing with this for almost a century
The north always compromised on tariffs before didnt they? Because they knew what would happen if they didnt.
andrew jackson's vice president left DC to to the south carolina to seceed
it was only a few months before another tariff plan came through
and they had the threaten to leave again
this was constant
almost an entire century of it
threatening to leave every two years for a century
eventually they said fuck it
lincoln straight up threatened to invade the south if they made one more objection to the tariffs
But every other president before lincoln got at least some southern states, so presidents still had to appeal to the south. Lincolns election showed that this was over.
that might have mattered
I don't think anything mattered more than him openly threatening invasion in his innaugural address
He could only invade the south, because neither him nor his party would ever need votes from there again.
him threatening to invade got some southern states to seceed
They secceded begore the inanaugural no?
when he ordered the other southern states to raise armies to invade the other southern states, they joined
no
it wasn't all at once
most waited to see
I mean South Carolina
he made a veiled threat
many said wait and see
