2019-08-25 10:31:41 UTC

I just think SC knew what was going to happen now that he didnt need southern votes, before he said he would use force in the innaugural

2019-08-25 10:32:18 UTC

nah

2019-08-25 10:32:21 UTC

His speech and the raising of an army convinced the other states

2019-08-25 10:32:25 UTC

he campaigned on it

2019-08-25 10:32:29 UTC

it wasn't new

2019-08-25 10:33:28 UTC

northern states had been failing to bring the southern states to heel for decades

2019-08-25 10:34:02 UTC

he promised to impose national law on them as he was campaigning

2019-08-25 10:35:18 UTC

putting an end to southern states rejecting DC policy was a central part of his platform

2019-08-25 10:36:39 UTC

dude suspened habius corpus basically day one

2019-08-25 10:37:06 UTC

imprisonned hundreds of journalists

2019-08-25 10:37:14 UTC

And I think the southeners thought he couldnt win on that. When he did they knew the north would elect their own presidents now and they wouldnt be able to stop them

2019-08-25 10:38:12 UTC

the southern states were operating under the rules at the time

2019-08-25 10:38:28 UTC

you can enter and you can leave

2019-08-25 10:39:14 UTC

it was not illegal to votw to leave then

2019-08-25 10:39:46 UTC

jefferson davis was never tried because of that

2019-08-25 10:40:23 UTC

not one prosecutor would take the case to try to convict him

2019-08-25 10:41:06 UTC

seccession was not illegal

2019-08-25 10:42:49 UTC

after years of searching for a prosecutor willing to take the case, the US govt gave up on it

2019-08-25 10:44:48 UTC

southern seccession was never ruled in court to be illegal

2019-08-25 10:45:50 UTC

every lawyer offered the job of saying otherwise turned it down

2019-08-25 10:47:06 UTC

remember that

2019-08-25 10:48:17 UTC

the US govt could not find one lawyer willing to argue in court that the south was wrong to secede

2019-08-25 10:49:49 UTC

Every lawyer they approached told them they would lose, so they never brought it to court.

2019-08-25 10:50:27 UTC

Gotta go. Good talk. Even if it had been illegal Lincolns actions were hardly proportional, invading your own country and all.

2019-08-25 10:51:58 UTC

locking up every journalist in the nation that didn't support the war

2019-08-25 10:52:55 UTC

suspending habius corpus, no rule of law

2019-08-25 10:53:46 UTC

allowing rich people to but their way out of the draft. but cash only

2019-08-25 10:55:20 UTC

Lincoln's tyranny extended after he was dead too

2019-08-25 10:58:21 UTC

Union POWs testifying in the defense of their POW camp commander, Wirz, were not allowed to testify to how their commandant's efforts to improve their condition had been blocked personally by Lincoln.

2019-08-25 11:01:09 UTC

He released them to travel to DC to ask him personally to allow POW transfers to alleviate strain on POW camps, and he refused.

2019-08-25 11:01:17 UTC

US gov't courts blocked them from stating this

2019-08-25 11:10:00 UTC

Lincoln personally ordered the end to POW exchanges to add extra strain to POW camps to drain extra resources. Despite testimony frrom POWs who said their commandant did everything he could to care for them, his policy lead to him being executed for mistreating prisoners he tried to release. Union POW camps that killled at far higher rates saw no similar actions.

In case you wanted to know the exact words the greatest president used when he openly threatened invasion, against Americans, in his first speech as elected president, here it is,
"In doing this there needs to be no bloodshed or violence, and there shall be none unless it be forced upon the national authority. The power confided to me will be used to hold, occupy, and possess the property and places belonging to the Government and to collect the duties and imposts; but beyond what may be necessary for these objects, there will be no invasion, no using of force against or among the people anywhere. Where hostility to the United States in any interior locality shall be so great and universal as to prevent competent resident citizens from holding the Federal offices, there will be no attempt to force obnoxious strangers among the people for that object. While the strict legal right may exist in the Government to enforce the exercise of these offices, the attempt to do so would be so irritating and so nearly impracticable withal that I deem it better to forego for the time the uses of such offices."
