i think it was part of the whole "human rights" stuff that made that slowly disappear, as the elite felt it below them

Article is a little over a week old but... WTF!? Did not expect to see a "positive" article about Trump coming from the CNN. https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/15/perspectives/trade-war-trump-triumph/index.html

@Putz
*"what you expect, there's a reason we got rid of public executions."*
Biggest mistake we made until some faggots decided executions were cruel and unusual or some such shit.
@Legalize, @wolfman1911,
Some people went to be entertained, this is true, but the purpose was to ensure the people ***REALLY UNDERSTOOD*** what would happen if they did what the condemned did.
Ehem... That's why absolutely ***BRUTAL*** execution methods (shit that would earn a movie an NC-17 rating at best) were generally used... Except Crusifixtion, because of Jesus' Crusifixtion we're all completely desensitized to that method.

2019-09-01 18:57:01 UTC

@Niknar84 its labelled an opinion not news article

2019-09-01 19:12:46 UTC

Execution prevents the criminal from committing another crime, so it can prevent crime. Lol

2019-09-01 19:16:59 UTC

@Legalize
You said something about executions being entertainment, and you'll partially right. (It kills me to say that btw.)

@Salacious Swanky Cat
Well, then there's that...

2019-09-01 19:34:44 UTC

@4AM_critter 🐉 since when has CNN done anything but opinion

2019-09-01 19:41:32 UTC

Since 2003

2019-09-01 19:41:57 UTC

The year the world went upside down.

2019-09-01 19:44:17 UTC

That year for the first time, the best selling rapper was white, the best golfer was black.
The french called the american arrogant, war was brewing and germany was invited to participate but declined.

@scaevola i take your point about seeing punishment inflected on a person could serve as a deterrent. But I think the majority of criminals know about punishments and don't care. Whether that's mental illness or crimes of impulse, the reality is a mass shooter today knows that their lives are over. Whether it is life imprisonment, public execution, or private execution doesn't change the reality of their lives being effectively over post shooting. making the punishment worse won't change anything.

@Avald when i said fairer sex, i wasn't referring to the opinions of the women. I was referring to men trying to shield the fairer sex from things they felt were egregious.

2019-09-01 21:24:10 UTC

@Putz First I think we need to differentiate between criminals who have mental illnesses and those who might be inclined towards crime but are somewhat rational human beings. For those criminals who are rational making the punishment worse does change things, because if you increase the risk of commiting the crime fewer rewards will seem worth it in comparison.

2019-09-01 21:32:48 UTC

No punishment can be worse enough to stop all people with mental illness from commiting crimes, but those people aren't all equally crazy. Them being mentally ill might mean that they derive pleasure from weird activities (like committing certain crimes) or that they dont have a clear view on risks and rewards of a specific action, but they are still human beings and human beings fear pain and death. Maybe a public execution woudnt be enouhg to stop those criminals, and again no punishment will stop all of them, but if you read about the truly savage ways of executing people during the middle ages and before, I think fear of that punishment might get through to people with mental illness, especially if they have watched the punishment before. There live might be over after committing a crime, but there are worse fates than your life being over.

laws passed in june

2019-09-01 21:48:38 UTC

politico made their article late and had to use hours after instead of a day after to get clicks

2019-09-01 21:49:01 UTC

"As some legislators and Democratic presidential candidates renew calls for gun control, the state is making it easier to carry guns in churches, schools, apartments and disaster zones."

2019-09-01 21:49:26 UTC

despicable writing

2019-09-01 21:53:07 UTC

Doesnt that show that the new laws dont cause shootings and have nothing to do with making it easier or harder to carry them out since the shooting happened before? Or did the shooter mix up dates and didnt know killing people was still illegal in Texas at the time of the shooting.

2019-09-01 21:57:30 UTC

@scaevola when your talking about public executions, the difference in punishment is not a determining factor. You think there are criminals who are okay with dying except if someone sees them die?

2019-09-01 22:10:15 UTC

No the public aspect is just to make potential criminals see how the punishment looks. I dont think telling a criminal about a punishment is as effective as showing it, you can read the wikipedia article about the breaking wheel all day, I still dont think we can imagine the pain someone who is killed in that way goes through as realisticly as someone who saw the process.

2019-09-01 22:20:56 UTC

its unnecessary, plus no one trusts their eyes these days anyhow

2019-09-01 22:21:32 UTC

Im not saying I want middle age style executions, I just say it would work in lowering crime

2019-09-01 22:22:02 UTC

Not everything that lowers crime is just though

2019-09-01 22:26:02 UTC
