just watched Matts Video on the London Mayor... the german "social media hate speech law" is not a "social media hate speech law"... that guy said that social media has to remove "hate speech" - not (really) true, fake news (not true in any way shape or form) and "illegal material" (true and the actual point of the law) and either does not know what he is talking about or is spinning it to fit the narrative of his speech. The "hate speech"-part is kinda false and kinda true because there is illegal speech in germany (most of it does not fall under free speech in the us either... slander, libel, direct threats... plus a few things that are obvious because of the countries history... i really don't like the law but it does not make anything illegal that was legal before and it most certainly does not outlaw "fake news"... otherwise the biggest "newspaper" in germany would be perma-banned from posting anything on any social media 😄

There's a difference between law and practice though. Sure, we could do a literal interpretation of the law every time we talk about it, but that wouldn't stop people being jailed for the way those laws are used in practice

Speech is always a selection of what we consider accepted defintions and not, and saying "You used this word that is not, by law, defined as you use it", doesn't really mean anything.

The reasons these laws are implemented seems quite clear.

well... i‘m not in favour of that specific law... i do not like it that social media companies have to judge what is „clearly illegal material“ (again... if it is not illegal in the first place the law does not even apply) because i do not think that the companies are in a position to accurately make that judgement. when it comes to german hate speech laws... they are in existence since 1949 and about as well defined as it is possible for those kind of laws (so... not very well defined... 😁) but yeah... they get misused more and more these days.

But the main point was: the mayer of london should shut up about german laws because obviously has no clue what they actually say 😁
