I kinda have the attitude that if you are something of a public figure and I'm not following you because of politics, I don't really want to hear politics from you.

I wouldn't care if a person is a public figure or not, i can't tell other people what they are "allowed" to do.
But it does make sense if people who are "public figures" were smarter about it, as they risk alienating people.
