Only because of subsidies
Otherwise it’s a cost hardly anyone would want to bear
Most people have solar panels on a mortgage-like payment plan lmao
If not specifically part of their mortgage
The idea that it’s dirt cheap without some (rather large) government support is misleading at best
I’ve read that Australia gets rooftop solar at around 1.20 a watt
No subsidies
Ok. I read up on it. It was only recently that they finally made them recyclable but they are highly complex to since they are made of a ton of different types of materials
@Salacious Swanky Cat so how would you get the solar panels up there in the first place?
Because those things are _fucking expensive_
Prohibitively so
You just kind of throw them up there. The key is that you have to put your body behind it
Be sure that you stick some chewed gum on the back so it sticks once it gets up there
Well, I’d either do it myself or see if I can get it done when I replace my roof.
Lol. There is a company that makes peel and stick panels.
solar was actually costing Germany a pretty penny last year. They had so much excess energy their companies had to pay people to use it
I could install the whole system in an afternoon with those.
@Salacious Swanky Cat the thing is, different localities, different costs, I guess
But a decent solar panel for a house here costs somewhere around AU $5k
Now with the cost of living here, it’s... _yeaaaaahhhhhhh_..... bit difficult to find $5k just lying around somewhere
I understand. It’s something you have to look at over a period of time for the investment. You guys still get it for cheaper than us.
Without subsidies
There are probably ways it can get cheaper (by using peel and stick panels maybe).
Maybe
But as I said in the other channel, I wouldn’t be surprised if without the scheme there would be far lesser amounts of people wanting solar panels
They’re not popular as it is even with them lol
That’s true. It’s mostly for enthusiasts for now. I don’t think every eligible rooftop will have solar. (No does it matter). I just want some because I think it’s cool.
Fair enough
I mean, I like the fact that it’s benefiting me to an extent
But only because I could afford it
It _has_ definitely lowered my electric rates since I’ve had it installed though, so, can’t complain I guess?
Like I said, prices could go down further. It’s just a matter of developing a new product.
True
But until it does..
You might also want to consider if it improves or devalues a home
My utility company does provide some payment for energy put back on the grid. Not full net energy metering, which I don’t care for.
Good point. I don’t know what it would do to resale. If I did it, I might be the first person in my town to do it.
It definitely raises value here
It would probably increase it here. Not many people south of Huntsville Alabama have rooftop.
I actually personally know one of the states top installers.
Most people think a pool increases their homes value too but it doesn't so I'd be sure about that
