Can someone explain the rise of Populism and why so many people love it and/or think its good? It stinks of mob rule, to me at least.

People felt not at all represented by their political leaders and so there was a backlash. These same people are pissed and want immediate solutions to their problems

Because they're now voting as a sort of organic bloc, politicians will pander to that

so how is populism not mob rule inverse of the upper class ruling elites?

They are there for a reason, and that largely revolves around their popularity, profit, or dogma.
