I've been through the same thing so many times. I think some of the most blatant examples are when I interviewed at a company who kept talking about how diverse they were and the phone interview was with a black guy from south africa

Another was when I was asked to come into an interview to talk to the same people (Jewish women in NY) I was on the phone with. I answered all of their questions and prepared demonstrations and they said that they were concerned I wouldn't "fit in the culture"

Then they talked about a lesbian data scientist and an Indian guy who just left.

She ended up just promoting the girl into the engineer position I was applying for. She had no engineering experience at all and was a cheerleader in school. I didn't even get to take the technical assessment

Also, I've been living in an immigrant landing zone. I've already moved twice to different parts of NJ and its been years now since I was in a room with more than 3 people that had all native English speakers. NJ is not an American state

I visited the state park to ride bikes, and I kid you not, out of the dozens and dozens of people on the trails, I didn't hear English once (including from white people there)
