I failed at completing part of a quest because the priest I needed to talk to was out for a walk and got killed by bandits

I discovered this because I found his body on the roadwith an arrow in it, then saw a bandit camp nearby

When I killed them all, I found that one had a golden communion chalice and was missing an arrow
