@Odalman Yhea, I would assume farmers markets could get you better deals than local stores.

That would be the equivalent of over 1200 ruppee's, which could probably feed you for over a week.
Grocery stores charge for the food, property, cashiers, shelf stockers, refrigeration, transportation, management, electricity etc
Grocery stores are based on convenience not necessarily saving money.

As you can see, the prices are not very bad when you are converting them to the US dollar.
(But you have to take into account that most jobs in india will not pay you well at all.)
