That's what my Dad does now, he started his own company with just himself and Mom so now he's in a corporate tax bracket and contracts all of his work out.
Now that's understandable
Yeah
A lot of maritimers are physical laborers.
The Mexicans of Canada really
Based af
Or Hohols of Canada
Nah we have Ukrainians out in Alberta and the praries.
They came here during the 1800's for whatever reason
My grandpa hated them and my aunt married an RCMP officer with Ukrainian heritage so that was always interesting dinner discussion.
Prolly cause Russian empire was poor af then and you could get sent to Siberia for advocating independent Ukraine
Just like for any other nation of Russian empire
That was also the time when a lot of Poles emigrated to the New World
Mostly from Congress Kingdom of Poland, but also from Prussia (Grand Duchy of Poznan) and Austria (Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia)
Yeah I got some family that came here around that time as well to be coal miners.
From east Prussia
Yeah, but they were Germans and from German part of the Prussia, so it's a bit of a different thing
In case of Poles and Ukrainians it was often too avoid persecution
Yeet.
Yeah I think the Ukrainians here was facing some religious opposition
Or something like that.
And taking part in uprisings
I never heard about that tbh, most Ukrainians were Orthodox anyway, and the rest were Unitarians, which are basically Catholic Orthodox, so I doubt it was anything serious
I think it was unitarians.
I'd have to look it up to be certain though.
Weird, but you may be right
A quick wikipedia search tells me they came here because WWI kinda sucked and they were having a famine as usual.
Understandable
Didn't WWI happened in 1900s though?
You were talking about 1800s
Yeah the initial settlers came in the 1800s but the vast majority came during WWI
They had few independent and semi-independent Ukrainian countries during and after the WWI
I still feel bad for them because of how we betrayed them during the Polish-Bolshevik war
We had a small power struggle back then, and one side promised Ukrainians that they will have an independent state in the Intermarium federation if they will retract their claims for eastern Małopolska and if they will help us in the war with Bolsheviks
But it was the nationalists that were singing the treaty in Riga, and they were like "no thanks, take these Hohol lands if you want Soviets, we're just gonna take the westernmost part we deem suitable for polonisation"
But well, when the another World War happened they did the whole Volhynia massacre thing, so I guess we're more than even now.
My favourite thing about Ukrainians and WWI was the whole Free Territory thing
Makhno was a real based fucker
Is that the anarchist commune that lasted for 2 years that every anarchist likes to cite?
Well, there were a few of them actually, but yeah, that was like one of the most important in the history
That was fast
