Why havent I heard of this?

here's the quick rundown

in 1961, two islands were discovered off the coast of antarctica by the magga dan expedition

they were named the terra nova islands

in 1963, a helicopter sent to confirm their existence ran out of fuel and ditched
there are conflicts in the reports so I don't know if it hit land or not

in 1970, the USGS registered the islands

some time between 1970 and 1980, the islands stopped existing

information on it is hard to get

but they were there in 1970

and they weren't in 1980

Islands dont just disappear, especially in just 10 years

well the islands are officially declared to not exist

Why?

because in 1989 there was a ship sent to the area and they found nothing
