a study followed two sets of students, with identical high school GPAs and SAT scores, the first group planning to go to college and the second group going directly into the work force or going to some sort of trade school, but not going to college

they followed them over the summer right after high school graduation

they gave them a test to see how much they had learned over the summer -- like vocab words, critical thinking skills, etc.

the group going to college learned more over the summer, because they were anticipating that they would need to know these things for college, so they took an effort to learn more
