If nothing matters, you gain absolute freedom to do whatever you want to. You are a self-aware being, which is almost exclusive to our species, and your ability to think critically and create gives you power to shape the world, and no matter how small or insignifcant your contributions might seem, they are leagues, even worlds above what other species can do, including those that are self-aware. I think it's that precise freedom that drives people towards nihilism.

The big con to self-awareness is that we are also aware of our own mortality, and that without inherrent meaning we have to look for our own place in the world, so to speak. This terrifies us, because our brains are wired to categorize everything and set it into relation, and a lack of inherrent meaning upsets that.

But here's the catch: with self-awareness, we also gain the necessary tools to shape our own meaning, that is why we have clashes of ideology. We can, within our means, create and also destroy. This means that nihilism is a self-defeating philosophy. Just because meaning isn't something that is underlying the rules of nature, it doesn't mean that whatever meaning we *choose* to assign to life is invalid.
