of course an animal who's locked into an artificially created environment with certain artificial incentives is going to behave according to those circumstances.

this makes judging an animal's "nature" by its performance in an artificial environment with artificial incentives absolute bunk.

but if the animal is reduced to its most basic instinct, that is, survival, then it will take the most advantageous strategy to secure survival.

in a modern society, this often takes the form of cooperation.

i'm not some naive idealist who subscribes to rousseau's musings on how humans are driven by some inherent love for their fellow man to create these exquisite societies, as much as i may like rousseau.
