well journalism and the free dissemination of information to the masses was considered a novel and noble career, so they took it seriously
Yellow journalism, corporate interest, and network protection have all created the shitstew of modern day media.
What's been happening is that mostly younger generations realize and see this baloney for what it is. Naturally with being so connected, they go to individual creators for their news. Typically pulling up past articles/reports for them to resolve discrepancies within the media itself.
It's not perfect and can backfire horribly, but it's what they got
