I'll take a FAL, some short-shorts, and a one-way ticket to Zimbabwe please.
Question here
Why is the fal used there and not some AK derivative?
That’s....a good question 🤔
According to Wikipedia:
"Following that country's unilateral declaration of independence in 1965, new rifles could not be readily procured from the UK, so Belgian FNs and South African R1s were imported instead."
I always found it weird why they would contract out fals
Well now I have a gap in my mustache and my boundaries violated so that's cool
the fals were a mainstay weapon for a longtime, but they're really bulky and heavy
IIRC a lot of Rhodesian weapons and parts were imported through South Africa, that might have something to do with it. The article above also mentions that the FAL was considered superior to Soviet weapons used by the opposition in Rhodesia.
They probably just stuck with it because the brit security forces brought them.

The brazillian army is just relatively recently passing the hand me down FALs to the police
They're replacing it with the IA2, which uses a similar but modernised mechanism in a modernised shape.
Also, we used 5.56 FALs

FAL is normally 7.62
