A government's goal is to preserve virtue and the family

and the environment

Governments job is to serve and protect the rights of it's citizens.

To save its people and protect them wherever they may live

as well as to maintain the traditions and ways of their people.

To enforce the rights of the people.

Not protect, not give, enforce.

A citizen's right is not a privilege or a gift that can be given away. A right is a contract between the state and the people that if you pay your taxes and follow your laws, you will be protected by the government.

In the example of the United States, the federal government should enforce the rights of every citizen to bear arms and not allow state governments to remove that right. The State/Fed divide only plays the citizens against one another.

Ultimate goal of government should be to attain a perfect society (utopia), where the lifespan reaches its maximum possible limit biologically and technology advancement becomes the main objective over, say... making money and starting wars.
Nuclear fusion should be made available quickly to stop reliance on non-renewable energy. Automation and AI use should skyrocket to the point where humans aren't needed whatsoever for manual labour.
Interstellar propulsion should be created with the objective of preserving humanity or whatever evolves from humans.
Humans that break the law would be forced to live out a prison sentence in a virtual state, feeling like months-years for them, but lasting only seconds in real life. (The tech is being developed for this.)
