The people you're talking about are SJWs. they're the ones that act like it's still a religion. they tried to do that with Atheism+. which was an insane branch of atheism that most atheists laughed at because it was so insane. the premise was that to be a part of it, you had to agree 100% with everything they believed to be worth associating with, or even deserve basic human dignity. It was so crazy that it never was going to work. It imploded and they all turned on each other.
