if you already know your bodyfat you can measure how hydrated you are in combination with how conductive your skin is
I mean you throw away your money and let your dad set goals for his health that he'll be measuring his progress towards inaccurately

Oh, I didn't realize the "calipers or a measuring tape" comment was a related suggestion, I thought you were asking if you should use calipers or a measuring tape and I was all "wtf is he talking about?"
But nah, the couple smart scales I've used have been pretty accurate to the into I've gotten at doctors offices, especially if you record often and look more at the trend than individual measurements.
