by the Hellenistic era I'm confused though because some sources say that the Hellenic identity lost a blood-based definition, whilst others assert a Hellenic racial caste above that of the natives they ruled over *explicitly* defined by their Hellenic heritage

And despite it all people actually have so many ways to come together that blood hardly makes any more sense than religion, political ideology, trade and economy, common place of residence or any other factor to count in.

Ultimately societies are build upon what people **choose** to believe they should be build upon, rather than any common factor outweighten all the other cause it *ought* to do it!
