there isn't different types of IQ

2019-07-12 08:19:02 UTC

the stereotype of "physicist who can't spell" isn't really true

2019-07-12 08:19:07 UTC

i never said it is

2019-07-12 08:19:14 UTC

some people are smarter than others, objectively

2019-07-12 08:19:15 UTC

there are different components that make up an IQ test, have you ever done one?

2019-07-12 08:19:24 UTC

But again, you're treating intelligence as if it's one thing

2019-07-12 08:19:29 UTC

"how good you are at memorizing equations"

2019-07-12 08:19:33 UTC

or "calculating big numbers"

2019-07-12 08:19:45 UTC

that's not what IQ trests at all

2019-07-12 08:19:46 UTC

when that's not the case

2019-07-12 08:19:50 UTC

but it's a proxy for that

2019-07-12 08:20:05 UTC

have you ever sat an IQ test?

2019-07-12 08:20:33 UTC

you mean take one?

2019-07-12 08:20:36 UTC

no i haven't

2019-07-12 08:20:36 UTC

yes

2019-07-12 08:20:46 UTC

well it is in some ways exactly what you say it isn't

2019-07-12 08:21:17 UTC

it's made up of several different factors, such as linguistic ability, spatial reasoning ability

2019-07-12 08:21:28 UTC

and they're very highly correlated

2019-07-12 08:21:54 UTC

linguistic ability

2019-07-12 08:21:57 UTC

can you specify

2019-07-12 08:22:11 UTC

so for example, I don't remember exactly since it was 10 years ago but 2 tasks are a vocabulary test, and another is spatial reasoning. I'll explain

2019-07-12 08:22:23 UTC

they'll ask you to explain the definition of increasingly uncommon words

2019-07-12 08:22:26 UTC

ok

2019-07-12 08:22:47 UTC

starts with like dog and cat or whatever, goes up to "unstoppable" or "ubiquitous", and on and on

2019-07-12 08:22:49 UTC

tell me, if you're a farmer who's never seen a school, how would you learn these increasingly uncommon words?

2019-07-12 08:22:57 UTC

you have no incentive, and no way of learning it

2019-07-12 08:23:07 UTC

spatial reasoning is rearranging blocks to fit a given pattern

2019-07-12 08:23:19 UTC

yeah vocabulary is a poor measure of any sort of "general" intelligence imo

2019-07-12 08:23:39 UTC

ye when even the racist says that

2019-07-12 08:23:42 UTC

u know you're wrong

2019-07-12 08:23:55 UTC

but then they change the rules unexpectedly and you have to kind of break the mould of your thinking, for example say you had 5 tasks to rearrange blocks with an explicit border around the outside then the 6th removed the border. it's an unfamiliar task and smarter people perform better at it

2019-07-12 08:23:59 UTC

of course it is, 'general intelligence' helps find and retain vocab though

2019-07-12 08:24:15 UTC

yeah, but if u never got the ability to learn this vocab

2019-07-12 08:24:21 UTC

you're gonna be at a disadvantage because of economic reasons

2019-07-12 08:24:22 UTC

sure

2019-07-12 08:24:26 UTC

not because of genetic reasons

2019-07-12 08:24:30 UTC

and for whatever reason, rearranging blocks is a really really good proxy for all sorts of things including mathematical ability

2019-07-12 08:24:38 UTC

you never answered my question Vindi

2019-07-12 08:24:49 UTC

obv you aint learning words that you never hear wt

2019-07-12 08:24:52 UTC

yeah

2019-07-12 08:24:54 UTC

it represents your ability to manipulate information with your mind
