The major difference between W Europe and Poland is that W Europe is a secular society whereas Poland is not. It doesn't mean that you're not tolerated if you're not Catholic. No one minds you really... It's just that you are expected to follow Catholic morality in public and if you do not, you are at fault. So basically gays are a-ok as long as they keep it to themselves but public displays are not tolerated (socially) - especially not the deliberately provocative displays like Pride Parades. To the Polish (especially outside of Warsaw), a Pride Parade is a challenge to the reigning social order whereas some gay dude is just some gay dude, he's not challenging the social order, so let him do whatever he wants.
