Let’s say you make a chair, it’s a really beautiful chair. It’s so beautiful that you don’t let anyone sit on it. Instead, you put it in a gallery and charge people money to come and see it.
People come from all over the world to see your amazing chair. Everyone loves the chair. You become rich. You’re celebrated as a brilliant artist. The chair is brilliant art.
But what is a chair? A chair is a tool that humans use for the purpose of sitting on.
If no one ever actually *sits* on the chair. If the chair is never used as a tool. It isn’t a chair. It’s a piece of sculpture.
yeah, I can see your point, but I was making that point, in simpler terms, now I'm making the point that the use of said tools is an artform in itself
Well, here’s where it gets quite technical. Is sport art?
depends
That's pretty blanket tho you can say that for anything.
The guitar is not art (you sure about that?)
The motions of the guitar player as he strums the instrument is not art (you sure about that?)
The end result, music, is art (we're all sure about this)
I would say high end playing of sport can be appreciated on an artistic level
That’s a generous, yet fair, statement.
I could agree that the guitar is not art, though it could be made into art at the cost of it's effectiveness as a guitar, but the motions of the player is blatantly an artform as it can be appreciated divorced from the music that it produces.
Again, let’s say the beautiful guitar, has an amazing paint job on it, or it’s made with exotic materials, or it’s just finely crafted. Well done. You’ve got some great art on a tool.
That's what I said
Read the second part of that statment
I was agreeing with you
well sortof
Read the second part
the rest of my statment
So if I'm really good at stacking boxes that's an art?
depends on how you do it really
It depends.
Why are you stacking the boxes?
it's all about the finesse and skill of your work
^
If you are stacking boxes simply so that people can look at the boxes and think about how well they’re stacked. Stacking the boxes was art.
If it’s you’re job to stack boxes, and you’re really fast and efficient at it. Well good for you. You’re great at your job. And we might be amazed and impressed. But it’s not art.
Exactly it is a skill that creates said art. Nothing wrong with appreciating skill.
It’s not the skill.
skill is an artform
It’s the purpose.
I can pick up a pencil right now and draw a stick figure man pooping into a teacup.
That’s art.
It’s really *bad* art. But it’s art.
perhaps this whole theory of 'art' is totally subjective?
No wonder art sucks nowadays when everyone make everything an art.
lol
are is indeed a social construct
If I am cleaning out one of the bins at work and spill iron oxide all over some scrap cardboard... it might land in such a way to create a beautiful pattern that everyone adores.
It’s not art. It’s an accident.
Nah that's art
... but if it commands a price - it's art!
You have to decide to create a thing that has no purpose other than be appreciated and judged *as* art.
I laid a massive shit the other day. Art.
Then you are making art.
Lol
I gotta go make dinner.
of course, stacking boxes can command a price too (in the form of a wage) - so you know, whatever
