A great example of the complicated nature of the status of Jews in Medieval Europe is the treatment of them by St. Louis of France. An Iberian Jewish convert to Catholicism went to Rome one day and told the pope that Jewish Rabbis were preaching heresy that offends Christ. The Pope asked the kings of England, Castile and France to investigate those claim. England and Castile ignored him while France obliged. There was a multi-chapter campaign of gathering Talmuds from Jewish communities across (mostly northern) France and verifying what was actually written in them. This was mostly done by Catholic monks under the King's orders. Later a formal jury was convened. The Jewish convert that started this whole thing was the main prosecutor (accompanied by some theologians), the King;'s mother served as head of the jury and a delegation of Rabbis were playing the role of the defense. In the end the Jews were found guilty of ~14 acts of heresy and many of the Talmuds were burned (though most only partially, meaning the offending passages were torn out and burnt) and the Jewish community suffered increased persecution and a BIG formal decrease to their legal status in the Kingdom.

On the other hand the (EXTENSIVE) canonization documents and testimonies of Louis IX who would become 1st ever non-martyred saint that wasn't a priest meticulously omit the shenanigans with the Jews. Most official sources of France do. Strongly suggesting that the whole thing was seen as pretty shameful and bad for PR....
