@smiley - All I can think to mention, is the difference between actual violent crime stats and public perceptions of violent crime. In the Clinton and Bush years people thought the country was getting more dangerous, even though violent crime rates were on a steady decline, and that perception was entirely caused by media coverage.

What people believe has less to do with reality, and more to do with what the media reports.
