it aint "owned"

2019-07-11 23:08:34 UTC

in my opinion

2019-07-11 23:08:42 UTC

Steam rarely if ever deletes user accounts, the only ones it does are those that are using them for criminal activity. That’s literally the only thing you can’t do on steam.

2019-07-11 23:08:46 UTC

you get the product

2019-07-11 23:08:49 UTC

and it can break

2019-07-11 23:09:09 UTC

Fuck even VAC bans don’t disable you from using the service, just stops you from playing on VAC protected servers

2019-07-11 23:09:12 UTC

it is even clearly defined *how* it can break

2019-07-11 23:09:46 UTC

But the thing is most games are steam ARE open source

2019-07-11 23:09:58 UTC

Literally nobody cares

2019-07-11 23:10:05 UTC

no they arent

2019-07-11 23:10:22 UTC

Well not open source but open

2019-07-11 23:10:25 UTC

My bad

2019-07-11 23:10:32 UTC

?

2019-07-11 23:10:39 UTC

DRM-free you mean?

2019-07-11 23:10:48 UTC

Nah, let me explain

2019-07-11 23:11:28 UTC

Because of how steam’s integrity validation works, most of the game files have to be open or otherwise easily accessible so they can be read by the server and then compared to the most recent (or in the case of betas, the cached) version so that it can be repaired or reinstalled

2019-07-11 23:11:42 UTC

uhhh

2019-07-11 23:11:43 UTC

no

2019-07-11 23:11:49 UTC

they just run a checksum

2019-07-11 23:11:50 UTC

That's not what open-source means

2019-07-11 23:11:57 UTC

Yes Eccles, I know

2019-07-11 23:12:02 UTC

Which is why I fucking corrected myself

2019-07-11 23:12:04 UTC

you can literally lock it into a few large pak files

2019-07-11 23:12:09 UTC

and have a single executable

2019-07-11 23:12:14 UTC

and the verification process still works

2019-07-11 23:12:24 UTC

because it's a checksum, that's it

2019-07-11 23:13:41 UTC

Fair enough

2019-07-11 23:14:06 UTC

I’ll take that, I got it wrong

2019-07-11 23:14:39 UTC

Doesn’t change the fact that Eccles is still an XP using boomer<:pepelaugh:544857300179877898>

2019-07-11 23:14:44 UTC

Was

2019-07-11 23:15:10 UTC

im dreading windows 7 end of life

2019-07-11 23:15:15 UTC

It was the being forced to change that made me fall out with Steam because of the way they ended the support

2019-07-11 23:15:56 UTC

Ironically it was Microsoft -sensible- decision to allow the installation of WIndows 10 without a license key that saved me

2019-07-11 23:16:01 UTC

i dont think win10 will run on my main laptop, and win 10 is a dumpster fire anyway

2019-07-11 23:16:24 UTC

@system11 Windows 7 has already reached its manufacture end of life, but steam won’t abandon it for a while. A major stake of its user base still uses windows 7

2019-07-11 23:16:45 UTC

i mean the out of support for OS updates EOL, not sure when that is

2019-07-11 23:16:59 UTC

Can't be much longer, System11

2019-07-11 23:17:10 UTC

yeah im sure MS will force the issue soon

2019-07-11 23:17:11 UTC

It’s already happened

2019-07-11 23:17:33 UTC

I have an old laptop running W7, it's got the specs to run W10 but won't because W10 is buggy and there is no value for M$ in fixing it

2019-07-11 23:17:36 UTC

But both Microsoft and steam realize that many users still use it, so the plug isn’t pulled
