Intelligence is not actually specifically defined in psychology, so yes, technically erudite does not mean smart, but arguing that way is really just being overly specific about which aspect of the general definition you want to take

There is a reason some people are revered for being wise, smart and philosophically minded
but a child has no experience and therefore cannot be wise
