Scientist named it (it is a developmental protein) that "looks" like sonic head, as in it has like 3 points on it.
proteins have basically no over arching nomenclature (rules of naming) so it generally becomes is based on look or function of the protein
Ie MAP Kinase (Mitogen-activated protein Kinase) and subsequent proteins are name MAP KK and MAP KKK
